Marine engineering is that course which deals with the running of ship engines, boilers, and steam connections. Marine engineering also deals with construction, designing of ships and other sea vessels. Marine engineers are completely responsible for the technical management of the ship and the overall responsibility of the selection of the ship’s engines and machinery lies with them. A marine engineer needs to understand the ergonomics of the ship as well. Institutes offering marine engineering courses There are two main training centers that offer marine engineering as an academic program. The two institutes are Training Ship Chanakya, Mumbai and Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata .The New Delhi based International Maritime Institute also conducts courses related in the field of marine engineering. The degree offered in these courses is that of Engineering or Bachelors’ in Science in Nautical Sciences. A number of private institutes also offer courses in Marine Engineering. However, such courses must be approved by the Mumbai-based Director General of Shipping. Most of the marine engineering programs only take in male candidates for admissions. However, there are a few institutes, which also allow female candidates. Eligibility criteria for marine engineering courses The educational qualification to gain entry into this course is that the student should be from a science background in their 10 +2 level. Their core subjects should have been math, physics and biology. Physical fitness is also very important in the entrance for the marine engineering course. One should be of sound heath. The minimum height that a person should be of is 150 centimeters. The height should be in proportion to weight. Course details The 4-year degree in marine engineering prepares the students for the Marine Industry through extensively covered theoretical classes, practical engineering education at the in-campus workshop, out-of-campus Shipyard and Shipboard training. The curriculum ensures sufficient exposure to electronic, computer and information technologies. There are a total of eight semesters. The subjects include english, applied mathematics, physics and electronics, computer science and marine management.The topics such as ship operation technology and other applied subjects (maritime commerce, marine engineering, environmental science, control systems etc.) are also focused upon. The training programs help the candidates to inculcate qualities necessary for the profession, both mental and physical. The practicals which are conducted are in the following subjects are astronomy, chart work, practical navigation, magnetic and gyro compasses, electronic navigational aids (radar, decca, and satellite navigator etc.) Career prospects A marine engineer has many job options but the one which is most popular is the Indian Merchant Navy. A career in the Indian Merchant Navy is considered to be highly lucrative as well as exciting and interesting. The Merchant Navy mainly comprises of tankers, liners, passenger vehicles, ore carriers and other type of specialized ships. These Merchant Navy ships are operated by public sector as well as private sector shipping companies. One has diversified option to select the ship one wants to join. One can join the Merchant Navy as a junior engineer and then get promoted to higher posts. To get promoted in the Merchant Navy one has to sit for exams in each and every level. Pay prospects A marine engineer working for the Indian Merchant Navy earns a lucrative pay. A junior engineer starts his career with Rs. 30,000 and carries on from there.
